Earthquake

It feels like an earthquake,
Ground suddenly splits,
The chasm grows deeper
With each verbal hit.
Across this divide
With our hands on each hip,
Ask “Why can’t you listen?”
“Oh please! Get a grip!”
Surprised and confused
When just moments ago,
We were talking and laughing,
Our hearts all aglow.
What happened right now?
How did things go so wrong?
I blinked and the peace
That we had was all gone.
I can’t swallow my pride;
I’ve done it before,
So often in fact that
My throat is still sore.
So what I need most,
Before my heart breaks,
Is a hug and a sorry –
‘Cuz that’s all it takes.

It’s not always about who’s right or wrong but sometimes just about reconnecting and moving forward with a sincere apology (if for nothing else, then for the hurt you helped create). Of course, no one wants to be the one to always make the first move.

  1. As a poet myself I must say your work moves me alot! Just beautiful!

    1. That is indeed a supreme compliment. I am moved and honored that you would feel that way about my work. 🙂

  2. Very succinct. An earthquake is a great comparison for the sudden shifts in a relationship.x
