Voice

It’s the voice that whispers
When no one’s around,
“You’re no good, you’re stupid,
You’re just a sad clown.”
Every time you see hope
Only inches away,
Wild laughter will follow
And voice will then say,
“You’re pitiful, really,
It’s too late to start;
Your soul is too damaged
And you’re not that smart.
You’ll never be happy,
You’ll never forget,
Your life’s a bad song
And I’m its duet.”

You turn up the music
To drown out the noise,
The voice in your head,
It kills and destroys
All the dreams that you have,
The hunger to live,
Flow out of your hands
Like sand through a sieve.
You’re empty inside,
Your heart a black hole
That sucks all the light
You have in your soul.

But if you hit bottom,
No more drops in your cup,
That’s when you must say,
“Voice, just shut the hell up!”

    1. It’s better that you yell at it than it yell at you. 🙂

  6. I’m touched by the beauty of your verses but moved by the importance of erasing those negative tapes…truly beautifully described how one tried to boost their self-esteem despite those old tapes from the past. WI

    1. I think everyone has experienced negative self-talk and how destructive it can be. I appreciate your feedback, as always. 🙂
