Our Brain

Until just recently
The model of our brain
Was one of a machine
With many parts contained.

Each had special functions
And roles in which it played
In how we lived our lives
And actions we displayed.

If a part was broken,
Damaged beyond repair,
We lost those functions too,
A model of despair.

Now a newer model
Is growing more each day,
A model that proclaims
Our brain will find a way.

It states we can rewire
The circuitry it has,
Not classically framed,
But flexible like jazz.

It shouts that there is hope
Beyond our wildest dreams,
From physical complaints
To psychologic themes.

‘Plegics have recovered
The use of every limb;
Before they had been told
Prospects were all too grim.

This means that even brains
Continually can grow
And hope indeed is real
In neuroplastic’s flow.
