Sneaking Time

The house is dark
And numbered chrome
As I creep up
To this new home.
I find the knob
Upon the door
And use a key
I snatched before
To slip inside,
I heave a sigh,
But then I hear
The words, “Oh my.”
My heart stands still,
I cannot breathe,
My feet now froze,
I cannot leave.
The lights come on
And suddenly
I see my life
In front of me.
“We knew you’d come,
You always do,”
My parents say
Without ado.
“Where have you been?
Look at the time!
This sneaking in
Is such a crime.”
They smack my head,
Each on one side,
And shoo me up
To bed, denied
To slip away,
Their grasp is firm,
Two hands allow
No room to squirm.
So sullenly
I edge my toe
Into my room
And then I throw
Myself upon
My bed and curse,
Having a curfew
Is the worst!

  1. Tell me about it! I’m glad I no longer have curfews, but I miss my parents!

    1. At least you can have one without the other now when you visit them! 🙂

  2. I don’t remember having a curfew per se, but I do remember coming home in the wee hours with the excuse of getting stuck on a back road in the snow. (That was the truth….however, my boyfriend and I used the opportunity to park.) In those days, happily, there were no cell phones to call for help and ruin a perfectly good evening. 🙂

    1. Pre-cell phones days…wow…to think that we once lived in those days…

  3. I remember staggering home one night when I was about sixteen, drunk as a skunk and, thinking that the living room was in darkness, walked smack into the door. The living room was actually well lit, because my parents were still up watching a film. But they’d shut the door for some reason. It didn’t half hurt my head.

    1. Glad this story had a happy ending!

      1. Not sure about a happy ending. I got bollocked for making them jump.

  4. Oh my…
    that is a curse!
    there’s nothing worse,
    then to live with parents
    when they are errant
    in accepting our age,
    and so make a cage
    of a needed hostel
    recreating a place so hostile
    closer to a prison
    than a home.

    1. Heck, that’s better than the poem I posted! Love it! 😀

      1. Aw, now who’s throwing around compliments! 😉

    1. Not as funny as your “I am not a chicken” post! Still laughing!

Haha, I can so relate with this!!! My parents were divorced though when I was old enough to date so when my mom remarried, her husband talked her into being more lenient. Still, I had to be home by midnight…:)

    1. Midnight is a pretty decent curfew…although for a teenager I suppose that’s still way too early. It’s funny how the older we get, the earlier we actually end up coming home.

That was when I was younger 🙂 Now I’m a mom and I’ll be giving my kids a curfew soon 🙂

  6. I remember jumping out of my window to meet my boyfriend.

    1. Yikes! Hope you were on the first floor!

      1. Yes we lived in a ranch. The kicker was that my window was above mom’s flower bed and I was breaking her flowers. I blamed the neighbor boys till one of the other neighbors who worked nights caught me. Then the gig was up!

  7. Love it! And the sympathies toward curfews sucking!! Lol

    1. Haha I’m not going to get in trouble with any parents I hope? 😛

      1. Shoooooot! If you do, I will graciously ignore them

  8. I still have a curfew but now it’s self-imposed!x

  9. I have a curfew at the moment self imposed been in hospital for 24 hrs. Got to sort a few things out with my health…Woke up with chest pains the other night taking it very easily till I see the doc again next week

    1. Yikes! That sounds really scary. You definitely should be taking it easy until you hear what your doctor says. I hope this is nothing serious but just a little hiccup. I will be praying for you in the meantime!

  10. Heh. Slapping is a little much right 😉

    1. Definitely! That’s why it was smacking! Like what someone will do to you if you could’ve had a V8. 😀

  11. A catchy reminiscence with nice rhythm and voice – very well done

  12. Haha this is so cute Sonya =) I never had a curfew because I never went out at night! I was shockingly popular I know. I love the rhyme and flow of your work fabulous!

    1. Sounds like your parents got a break in that respect. You are not-so-shockingly popular here on WP. 🙂

      1. I was so excited when I got my first follower haha

  13. This made me smile! I remember sneaking in, whispering to friends, thinking we were being so quiet. We weren’t though; we always woke my parents up. I just love the way you rhyme 🙂

    1. Hehe sneaking in is all a part of being a teenager. Sigh. I love the way you rhyme too! 🙂
