I stared into the heart of darkness
For what comfort I could find
Somewhere in the beating madness
Feeding arteries of my mind.
Obscured by shadows everywhere,
I wondered what I’d left behind.
Upon a throne sat grim despair,
Feeding arteries of my mind.
I asked, “What are you doing here?”
He looked at me; his gaze was blind.
He said it was because of fear,
Feeding arteries of my mind.
“I do not think that I’m afraid,”
Defiantly, I said in kind,
“Of letting go. Enough,” I bade,
“Feeding arteries of my mind.”
And then he laughed and scratched his head.
“But you’re the one who has assigned
Me to this task,” is what he said
While feeding arteries of my mind.Β Β Copyright 2013 Β© Sonya Annita Song
I went through a time in my life that this describes perfectly. I could feel your words deep within. Well done. π
It is hard to let go of something that causes you pain and yet is somewhat comforting at the same time. I’m glad this was in the past for you. π
Self perpetuating is it not?
The cycle must be broken.
Hope lies in the veins to quell
Despair’ s whispered words, ill-spoken.
A flush of blood renewed in breath
A gasp of cool fresh breeze
Inhale, exhilirate to raise
To upright from our knees.
Magical, Cubby. And sad. Loved it.x
Ooo, what an excellent response! Love it. A vein of hope is all it takes to stop the cycle, but it must be tapped into. π
Close eyes, Deep breaths. Begin. π x
Great piece Cubby, I am impressed by the things you write. All those aspects of our selves so well dealt with. Excellent.
Your words warm my heart. I’m so glad you enjoy my writing. π
Wonderfull writing, I loved the repeating line and how you used it to set the foundation for this poem.
I am learning how to blend different forms into my writing, so I am glad you are enjoying my efforts. π
nice one π If I am right, Is this kyrielle type of poetry??
Hehe almost but not quite. I have a kyrielle sonnet scheduled for tomorrow night, but this one does overlap with that form quite a bit. Sharp eyes. π
Oh! that’s cool π looking forward to your kyrielle sonnets….:)
There is always a hidden key π
But of course. π
Hmmm…
styles and forms
meshing and flowing
in your brilliant mind
They become all tangled up in there and then breed poems of bizarre natures. π
Beautiful though…reminded me of the epic poem you were writing awhile back too…which you are resting on π
Yes, it took a toll on me, and when joy leaves the writing process, I must stop until I find it again.
That is all too true…nothing is well written if there is no joy in it…we’ll hope that inspiration returns when least expected!
Your poems contain such good messages.
Hehe only whatever the reader can take away from them. π
beautyful, youre words touched my heart !
I’m happy they were able to do so. π
How very sinister! And, yes, we do feed our own fears.
Without even being aware that we are doing so sometimes.
wow….very nice
Thank you kindly. π
Impressive and powerful. Hauntingly beautiful. I love that it’s a dark piece with a rhythm that also makes it fun to read.
Thank you so much for your kind words. No matter how dark, I always want my poems to be fun to read. π
You write very well. Your work reminds me of Emily Dickinson’s poems
I had my peanut butter poem likened to Shakespeare, so I don’t know what to think anymore (except that maybe some of my readers are a little nutty too), but thank you kindly, I’m very flattered by such a remark. π
Maybe you are a hybrid of both π
Fascinating! I have been reading lately a book that touches on fear and how we assign our minds the task of trying to solve the things which bother us when all we need to do is basically tell it to shut up. Great messages in your poems lately!
It is not an easy skill to master, the art of shutting up one’s mind. Glad you found this one so interesting! π
My god this is outstanding!!!! Love love the repeating line =) Brilliant!
Lol thank you. You are too kind. I’m glad you enjoyed the poem. π
Extremely profound. I can feel the emotion and depth in this. I feel this way perpetually. Beautifully worded and an excellent read. I hope you find relief. π
Many thanks for your kind words. I am so sorry to hear you always feel this way. It is something I am very familiar with but no longer experience on such a regular basis. I hope you can find some reprieve in other ways.
Beautiful. Amazing how the brain races when the heart is is in disrepair. Great form.
Thank you very kindly. So glad you enjoyed it. π
time to get a bypass! π and what form is this?? you know so many, I’m amazed, me I just rhyme away, no style or form…lol
Um, this was a botched Kyrielle form attempt hehe. You always have a wonderful and personal style of your own in your poems that I’ve read. π
I’ve never heard of any of these styles you do, so thank you for posting all the different ones and their rules….I’m learning so much from you!!! π
I’m learning as I go, and teaching as I go, so hopefully I am not messing up the instructions! π
Everyone has said it all. Brilliant
Too kind. π
Cubby, very clever!!
Hehe, I fixed it, no one has to know what your fingers did. π
Clever, of you! π
Great poem! I loved the meanings of “feeding arteries of my mind”. Good work, Cubby; Reowr!! π
I might have been a little hungry when I wrote this hehe. π
Such depth in this poem. It’s hard to see reason when we’re in the grip of despair. Beautifully written, Cubby!
Thank you so much Miranda. Your comments are always appreciated. π
My first visit to your site, Cubby, and it’s very interesting. Really liked the poetry, rich with messages, and especially the rhyme. So many today write more and more free verse rather than classical poetry. Will be back!
Yes, classical poetry has fallen out of favor in the literary world, but I am hoping it will make a resurgence one day. Thank you so much for your kind words, and it makes me very happy to know you enjoy reading my poetry. π
My own mind is usually my most valuable asset and greatest adversary all at the same time π
beautiful metaphorical description
Always. They say to keep your friends close but your enemies closer; well, it doesn’t get much closer than that. π
Your style and rhythm always keep me captive. Thank you.
And thank you for your kind words. π
Truth be told, always.
I like how this reminds me of Poe. Is it “El Dorado” or is it just that firm meter that you held on to? I don’t know but it’s positively magical.
I’m embarrassed to admit that I wasn’t even familiar with that particular poem and had to look it up. This is a bit of a mishmash of forms that I have learned. I’m glad you enjoyed it. π
Really very good. The thing I love about despair is his dignity and absolute willingness to serve, I once had a butler named despair…
Always ready and willing. But I think he’s a sadist and those who want him to work all the time are masochists.
Quite!
Wonderful, Cubby. I like the repetition for emphasis..
I’m so glad you liked the repetition in this. π
oh Cubby this is excellent!
It’s a great poem; images popped up in my head when I read this. I like the words, it’s simple and elegant. Good piece, keep it up.
I’m a newbie writer/poet and blogger, so do check out my blog and poems when you have some time. Here’s the link-
