Better To Be

Don’t wish that you were just like me
Because you know it’s true:
You’ll never be a better me
Nor I a better you.

Though you can try your very best,
You’ll lose yourself this way,
So look inside instead of out
And find the words to say,

I can always be a better me
And you a better you,
And that’s the way it’s meant to be –
Ourselves we grow into.Β Β Copyright 2013 Β© Sonya Annita Song

  1. We can only be ourselves who else can we be?

  2. Very true, it is better to be yourself – always!

    1. Yes, it is much better. πŸ™‚

  3. Excellent sentiments Cubby. Also beautifully written as always

    1. I’m very happy you think so. πŸ™‚

  4. Always better to be you!

  5. So true! So well expressed Cubby- I love how the last line came together πŸ™‚

    1. Hehe rather self-evident but a good reminder, I hope. πŸ™‚

      1. It is always good to be reminded of the ‘obvious’ from time to time πŸ™‚
Anyway, it is well written, it doesn’t matter how often one is reminded!! πŸ˜‰

      2. P.s I meant “if it is well-written” (like yours is!)

          1. πŸ™‚

  6. Amazing facts of life. Hum it and be free. πŸ™‚

    1. Ah, and there you have it…freedom. πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you very kindly. πŸ™‚

  7. “Darn…and here I wanted to be a better Sekhmet…oh well!” days Bastet. Thanks for your wisdom Cubby, it weems in our present era we’re always trying to be anything but ourselves. Great Poem.

    1. Tha t should have been says Bastet…maybe I should look into a new keyboard ( oh well I can pretend it’s the keyboards fault anyway πŸ˜‰ )

        1. ROFLing….I don’t know why I skip keys and stuff like that. It usually happens when I’m typing in a hurray (so it happens often!). My capitals don’t capital and I have to go back an re-do them, skip letters, and mess up the a-s-d keys at times…must be the keyboard I’m sure πŸ˜€

          1. *chortle* I believe you! πŸ˜‰

  8. very true, Sonya. All people have their own beauty. Excellent expressed in a beautiful poem.
    groetjes, Francina

    1. Absolutely. Everyone has so much to offer in their own beautiful way. πŸ™‚

  9. We are the actors, playing our roles. When we try to be some one else, the drama of life comes out to be shabbier. But who will tell this wretched heart… that always aspires to be branded in some one else’s chest but for this one where a vacuum regularly calls for it.
    Don’t mind my ranting… Really well-written creation. πŸ™‚

    1. What a beautiful rant. You rant so poetically. πŸ™‚

  10. Beautiful poem from a beautiful you.

    1. Aww, you are too sweet. πŸ™‚

  11. Beautifully said and tellingly true.
    Len

    1. Thank you very kindly. πŸ™‚

  12. Aren’t we all trying to better ourselves!Well said Cubby.

    1. Yes, the quest for self-improvement is ideally a lifelong one. πŸ™‚

  13. Yes! This is excellent! I wish more people understood this truth! I don’t think any of us see ourselves as others do, nor do we believe in our hearts that we can change ourselves, improve ourselves as we think we should be. Super poem!

    1. It is difficult to see ourselves objectively and requires a lot of introspection, or so I believe, but in doing so we can be more honest with ourselves and create change from that honesty. But this is a little beyond the scope of my poem here, perhaps. πŸ˜‰

  14. Words of self improvement. so true.

    1. There’s always room for it, or so they say. πŸ™‚

  15. Lovely poem. Lovely message. It reminds me of the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote: “Insist upon yourself. Be original.”

    1. That’s a great quote. I love quotes, although I can never remember who said what and exactly how they said it. πŸ™‚

      1. I have a huge collection of my favorite quotes. This is surely not the last quote I’ll be reciting! πŸ™‚

  16. Love It! How I grow into a better me each new day! As we all do!!

    1. We are hopefully always growing into our better selves. πŸ™‚

  17. True words yet how often I wish to be some one else πŸ™‚

    1. I think most of us had that wish at least once in their life, but I think who you are, from what I have gleaned from your writing and comments, seems pretty darn terrific. I’m glad you’re you. πŸ™‚

      1. πŸ™‚ aw thank you

  18. Great reminder! All I can be is MY best me! I will meditate on that today.

    1. Yes, be the best version of yourself. πŸ™‚

  19. Another great message Cubby!

    1. I’m glad you thought so! πŸ™‚

  20. How often we interpret improvement as change to meet another or aspire to be like someone else. Openness to our own selves and recognising the differences within us all the only way to go. You are so in tune with life.x

    1. Ah, you understand the meaning so well. In tune with myself, methinks, more so than with life…although perhaps that is synonymous here. πŸ™‚

      1. Sometimes I think I’m in tune with the moon….Not much going on up there. Then, pow, enlightenment, wrought, so often, by the words of a fellow moon dweller! You’re spot on as usual, Cubby. πŸ™‚

  21. It’s hard to be original while pointing out ideas that should be self-evident. This poem is, however, original and sparks ideas about how we should strive to better ourselves, and not to better characteristics we envy in other people. I hope I didn’t misinterpret the meaning though!

ps. I like your other poems too. They are able to capture ideas in a concise form, something which I have trouble with.

    1. No, you did not misinterpret the meaning. Your thoughts are very much appreciated. As long as you say what you want to say the way you want to say it, length should not be an issue. πŸ™‚

  22. Lovely wise poem so beautifully said…again πŸ™‚ I think when we are younger we have mentors or people we aspire to be like and until we fine tune the new learning, we may adopt certain styles for example when I started counselling and teaching, I had a few I admired and it took a few tweaks here and there until I “grew into myself”. But truth be told, when I grow up I want to write JUST like you!! πŸ˜€ ❀ , Namaste, Cheryl-Lynn

    1. Yes, I think we can all learn from mentors and aspire to cultivate certain characteristics that are common to everyone, such as compassion, generosity, and kindness, but in varying degrees. Skills and styles in the work environment can definitely be taught and learned. However, in regard to talent, I believe that everyone has talents that are “unique” in some way in that they are flavored by our experience and personalities (i.e., music and writing). What makes us who we are is a blend of all the common traits we have calibrated for ourselves through learning, the talents and skills we have cultivated, and a hodgepodge of whatever else we assimilate into the fabric of our character (my brain stopped working). When you grow up, if you can write JUST like me, I’ll let you take over my blog. πŸ˜‰

      1. Ahahaha, I am much older than thee
and would never consider replacing Cubby,
you are way too artsy and ingenious,
I’ll just continue to enjoy and relish…
        thee. πŸ˜€

        1. When thee is me, it can’t be we. 😦

Truth in words, these be said by Reowr, i am me and i accept and you are you, in that, i respect

  24. Being yourself is the easy part, the hard part is figuring out exactly who that is first!

    1. If you are yourself without knowing who you are, how do you know that you are being you? But I suppose there is a great distinction between being and knowing. One can be without knowing, but knowing can help one be.

      1. Well technically yes, one can be themselves without knowing who they are, but how anyone could know that without first knowing who they are is anyone’s guess haha!

        1. That is quite the conundrum indeed! πŸ™‚

  25. That is SO good, took me a long time to figure out I was spinning my wheels and goin’ nowhere, trying to be like the folks I so admire.

    1. I think it takes awhile for many of us to figure out who we are and be true to ourselves. In the end, the journey only enriches the self that we discover.

  26. This seems to be inspired by Dr. Seuss, or at least that’s what it reminded me of.

    1. No, not inspired by Dr. Seuss, but I can see why it would remind you of him. πŸ™‚

  27. Wonderful message and writing, Cubby!
    Lauren πŸ™‚

    1. Many thanks! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! πŸ™‚

    True Story!

  29. Tremendous post. I love it. Be yourself……What a concept. Wish everyone got it like you so obviously do. Love the rhythm and rhyme as well.
    Keep inspiring

    1. It is such a simple concept but not always easy to do, unfortunately. It requires a lot of self-awareness and introspection, which is a skill that must be practiced to develop. Thank you so much for your lovely comments. πŸ™‚

  30. Reblogged to Stumbling Blocks and Stepping Stones because the truth and importance of one’s identity is a favorite theme of mine. Good stuff!

    1. Aw, it warms my heart to know that you enjoy my poem enough to reblog. πŸ™‚

Truth spoken in a few well-chosen words. Love this.

  32. Ah yes, ’tis true, ’tis true
    No matter what we do
I shall be me, and you shall be you πŸ™‚

That’s the first bit of rhyming poetry (poetry of any kind, actually) I’ve written in ages. Be proud; you’ve inspired me. πŸ™‚

    1. That was just lovely! You have a talent for rhymes methinks. πŸ™‚

      1. Thanks. πŸ™‚ I’m woefully out of practice though… Guess I better fix that.

        1. I couldn’t think of anywhere else to post this, so here goes…

There once was a cute little kitty
Who wrote lots of poems, delightful and witty
          She’s quite the inspiration
So as a sign of my appreciation
I whipped up this little ditty πŸ™‚

          1. Ah, I love it! That is a super awesome poem! Reowr! πŸ˜€

    Beauty of the soul

  34. Sage advice & lovely words πŸ™‚

  35. i like this very much. i was actually thinking about this idea the other day. if i were to, hypothetically, ever have the opportunity to start my life all over, to be another person with a new story, a clean slate … would i ? my impulsive answer is no. even with all the shit i’ve gone through, it’s part of what has shaped the beautiful parts of me too. so, i am, a horrible and wonderful creature. but i am me. and i love it.

    1. That is so good to hear. It is hard to grow into ourselves and feel comfortable in our own skin, but once we accept who we are, we can strive to reach the potential that is within us. πŸ™‚

  36. Wonderfully inspirational, Cubby

    1. I’m so glad you thought so! πŸ™‚

And that my friend is the secret to happiness

    1. You, of all kats, would understand the sentiment in this poem as you are so uniquely and wonderfully you. πŸ™‚

  38. Inspired me! Wonderful piece. (=
