The Defenders

Brave wombats roam
The earth at night
In their purple
Masks and capes.
You most likely
Have not seen them
As they’re quick
To make escapes.
But should you find
You’re being chased
By wicked men outside,
They will scamper
In the darkness
And trip evil
On its side.
They move quite fast
For stubby legs
To aid in shadowed sun,
But they can
Only do so much
Before they’re
Pooped and done.
So please know how to
Guard yourself,
Get whistles just in case,
For though they’ll try
They could decide
To nap instead of chase.

Note: Wombats can run up to 40 km/h (25 mph) for up to 90 seconds, but they usually have a slow, waddling gait. They also have secret international bases for their covert operations. Waddle waddle.

  1. awesome

  2. A Superman wombat! Who knew?! Love this. A nice smiling start to my morning. :)x

    1. Lol they are pretty impressive little critters, that’s for sure. 🙂

      1. I knew next to nothing about them until now. Not that I’ll be meeting any here in my part of the world! But it’s always nice to know that possible Supermen are lurking nearby. 🙂 x

  3. This made me laugh. I needed that. Thanks for sharing

    1. I’m so glad it could make you laugh. 🙂

  4. This made me smile, it’s nice the variety of poems you have

    1. Hehe variety is the spice of life! 🙂

  5. This is so cute I could picture the whole scene in my mind! You brighten up my mornings =)

    1. Wombats are so friggin’ cute! Ah, wish I had a wombat. 🙂

      1. They are ridiculous cute =)

  6. Oh this is wonderful! What a lovely start to my day! And your final waddle made me laugh out loud. 🙂

    1. Hehe I’m so happy you enjoyed it! 🙂

  7. Yes that’s right they can move quickly when they need to, they can also cause your car a damage should you hit one. And yes their bases are secret.

    1. Yes, they are impressive creatures. They were once thought to be “stupid” because they would barrel right through doors and walls and whatever else stood in their way. The verdict these days is that they are actually quite intelligent and clever but very single-minded creatures.

  8. They look so cute and cuddly, Who knew those short legged balls of fur were that quick on their feet.

    1. I know, it’s so surprising isn’t it. I don’t think I can run anywhere near that fast. And yes, they are so cute and cuddly looking! 🙂

  9. Another one for your children’s book? It’s cute….and led me to following the link to read all about the wombat. So…Oct. 22 is Wombat Day…what do they do to celebrate?

    1. No, not for children’s book, just a random poem hehe. I think they celebrate the courage of all the wombats that have fallen in the line of duty on Wombat Day.

  10. Lovely!! Made me laugh thanks xxx

    1. Hehe so glad it did. 🙂

  11. This made me smile.. =) I love this.. Happy to read this before my Wednesday ends. =)x

    1. I’m always amazed at the time zone differences. I’m glad it made you smile. 🙂

  12. It’s Lewis Carroll and ” Alice in Wonderland” – isn’t it ? Lovely.

    1. Is it? Wombats made an appearance in “Alice in Wonderland”? I had no idea! Those cute little critters get around! 🙂

  13. This poem is adorable! XD

    1. Lol I’m happy you thought so. 🙂

  14. lol…..I loved this, but what made me chuckle is that, this morning, I am plagued with a slow waddling gait…..Wombats are my new favs. 😀

    1. Ah, being plagued with a slow, waddling gait is not good for humans…good for wombats, but not humans. Wombats are pretty darn cool. 🙂

      1. Well, I am happy to inform that my gait has stopped wobbling for the moment…I am now more like the quick chickens running past my window!! 🙂 Not quite…just hopeful.

Wombats are cool…..and so are you! 🙂

  15. I can’t stop visualizing them!!!!! I love the wombat brigade. Wonderful poem and so much fun. A gentle alert by well dressed wombats…who could ask for anything more? Love it:)

    1. The Wombat Brigade would have been such a better title for my poem. It has been pointed out to me already that I suck at making titles, and I do believe this to be true. Ah well. The wombats are happy with it, so I’m okay too. 😀

      1. I think your title is ideal.

        1. Hehe I’m happy you think so. 🙂

  16. This is too adorable! I love your imaginative inspiration!

    1. Haha I am so glad you liked it! 🙂

  17. LOL!!!!! 😉

    1. Aw, so glad you did. 🙂

Good stuff. Their feces are cubicle; so unique. ; )

    1. I know, I thought that was kind of strange too. They are very interesting critters. 🙂

  19. Going to buy my whistle today! Really enjoyed this. Thanks Cubby!

    1. It never hurts! I’m glad you picked up on the only useful bit of writing that there was in the post lol. 🙂

  20. Very nice, I will put that one with my Shel Silverstein collection.

    1. Hehe you are too kind. 🙂

  21. LOL! The first line got me. Informally speaking, to refer to someone as a wombat is…well…having a good-natured dig at them. And then there is the old joke about why a [certain] man is like a wombat… because he eats roots and leaves 😉

Great work. Best fun I’ve had in a long time.

    1. It was once thought that wombats were stupid because they would barrel right through fences, doors, and even walls, but now they are recognized as being quite intelligent and clever. They are, however, very single-minded apparently, so don’t get in their way. So glad you enjoyed the poem. 🙂

      1. Oh well something got lost in translation there… Glad you have discovered our local wildlife.

  22. A lesson on wombats–who’d a thunk it? I love the poem–you have quite a gift! And did I tell you how much I like your header picture? What is it of?

    1. Haha a gift for silliness perhaps. My header picture is that of a meteor shower. It makes me very happy that you like my header picture and my silly poem. 😀

      1. I like the teeny tiny stars, meteors in the blue! And truly, silliness IS a gift–it’s something I’ve been cultivating the past 2 years. That, and and my Faith are life-savers!

        1. Strong faith coupled with a good sense of humor make for a formidable duo. 🙂

          1. You betcha–Look Out!!

  23. This is so adorable, Cubby. I hope I dream of cute little wombats with purple capes tonight!

    1. Ah, that would make for some pretty cute dreams! I hope they make an appearance for you. 🙂

  24. Nice poem! A poem about wombats…now that’s something new in the poetry world for me.

I like this concept of wombats very much. 🙂

    1. Wombats are very cute but quite dangerous if you piss them off. 😉

      1. I once touched a wombat and it shook my hand. 🙂 and I said welcome mr wombat would you like some tea? and the wombat said yes! hahaha!!! Awesome poem.

  25. They look like sweet creatures…but suppose as is with most sweet looking creatures they can get mean if they have to…interesting how they have their pouch on their back to avoid filling it with dirt when they dig! Loved your informative poem and I will certainly beware of wombats in the future! Lol 😉

    1. They are so adorable and apparently like to be scratched, especially their tummies. They get along quite well with humans when so inclined. Glad you liked the poem! 🙂

      1. I looked at a bunch of images of them…not at all like a bat, simply lovely creatures! 🙂

  26. “They also have secret international bases for their covert operations. Waddle waddle. ” 😉 Love that! Let me reblog, if it is ok with you. Cheers, off now, checking out all about wombats. serge

    1. Lol glad you liked that last bit. Really loved the wombat video you posted. I would be most honored by the reblog. 🙂

  27. Most enjoyable! I will be thinking about these mammals very differently next time I spot one.

    1. If I ever go to Australia (they are notoriously difficult to find when they are undercover), I may try to sneak one past the border. I think that’s illegal though. 😀

  28. Reblogged this on dithyrambs & ditties and commented:
    thanks for sharing. Love them!

  29. HAHAHAHA!! So cool! You just gave me the first belly laugh of the day! Thanks a ton!

    1. Lol glad you got a kick out of this one. 🙂

  30. I noticed that you labeled it “Silly Things”, when in fact, it’s not silly at all. I don’t know why, but I see an infinitely deeper meaning to just wombats, and it just chills me… what it could mean connotatively. What you’ve written is beautiful and I absolutely love it.:)

    1. You are absolutely right. There is a deeper meaning that is not at all silly, and I’m glad you picked up on this so well. We live in a scary world.

  31. Oops. Make that “Silly Stuff”. Haha, my bad.

  32. I love this! I wonder what the wombat battle cry is?

Nice to know we have something standing up to the evil lurking around the corner.

    1. Hmm, that is a good question…waddle waddle?
