In Waves (Quatern)

I splash in waves of dark and light,
Eternal day, eternal night.
With mirrored sheep, I float and catch
Warm rays of sun that shyly patch

Into the world in shades of white.
I splash in waves of dark and light,
But darkness calls and I will slip
Into the depths, a sundered ship.

Enrobed in black, I flail around;
I cannot see when eyes are bound.
I splash in waves of dark and light
To grasp the meaning of my plight,

That waking is not death to sleep;
I learn to step and then to leap,
Now dancing to my soul’s delight;
I splash in waves of dark and light.Β Β Copyright 2013 Β© Sonya Annita Song

  1. So deeply beautiful! I love all your spiritual ones!

    1. Aw thank you so much. πŸ™‚

  2. Reblogged this on wdbwp and commented:
    Speaking of rhymes. πŸ˜€

  3. Ohhhh the imagery is SPLENDID!! πŸ˜€

    1. I am so happy you think so! πŸ™‚

  4. I really liked this…so sprighty and skipping, like a song that children would sing…did you mean to write … I cannot see when I am bound? I’ve got a new type of chocolate over here…made by Kraft believe it or not…I’m sending you a sample πŸ˜‰

    1. I double checked the line that you mentioned, and it looks the same as what you have written in your comment, unless I am completely blind which is entirely possible. A new chocolate made by Kraft? Wowza. Hummina hummina. Too kind! πŸ™‚

      1. Ok…wasn’t sure if you were going for where or when. Yes, it’s Philidelphia with Milka Milk Chocolate…very good.

  5. Reblogged this on Bastet and Sekhmet's Library and commented:
    This is a pick-me-up poem…it is really great…have a look!

  6. Nice! I enjoyed this poet and lyricist.

    1. I am so glad you enjoyed this. πŸ™‚

  7. I love this. Beautifully written.

  8. I love the way you have balanced the light and dark… warm whites, to black robed darkness and then slowly balancing, dark and light. Beautiful as always, Cubby.

    1. What a lovely comment. Many kind thanks. πŸ™‚

  9. I really love the imagery…not only can I envision it but I feel it; really enjoyed reading this.

    1. I’m so happy you enjoyed reading it. πŸ™‚

  10. Loved this one Cubby, i thought it was very lyrical. Maybe you should put some of your poems to music. Two of my friends have done it with a few of mine. excellent as always

    1. Ah, that would be nice. I have to see if anyone is willing first lol. πŸ™‚

  11. “I splash in waves of dark and light” – very nicely put. Contrast always makes for good imagery xx

    1. Glad you liked the contrast in this! πŸ™‚

  12. Love the play of images here! πŸ™‚

  13. What?!! No quatern challenge?? This is a very wonderful poem–shining with your brilliance!

    1. The challenge is scheduled for tomorrow. I like to try to give 2 examples of the form. Many thanks for your kind words. πŸ™‚

      1. Okay, I’ll try to rest up for the challenge.

  14. “I splash in waves of dark and light.”
What a beautiful beginning and the end…
It has such a punch in them…

  15. A brilliant piece! I believe you have captured inside your beautiful, rhytmic rhymes one of the bare essences of the soul. I loved these lines:”I splash in waves of dark and light
To grasp the meaning of my plight,”

    1. Thank you so much for your lovely thoughts Oloriel. Your words always make me feel so warm and fuzzy. πŸ™‚

  16. You are such a great poet!

  17. It is interesting that even the TONE of the poem went from light to dark and back to light again. I’m guessing that this will be a poetry challenge as well, though maybe you’re tired of teaching the forms and administrating the submissions….a lot of work, I imagine… I applaud your poetry and efforts to encourage those of us with less technical writing knowledge.

    1. I find it incredibly fulfilling to teach others the knowledge I gain about writing poetry and to see how the form is transformed is so many different ways. It does not feel like work to me at all. So yes, there is a challenge coming up tomorrow. πŸ™‚

  18. Love this, I have tweeted a link πŸ™‚

    1. I’m so happy you loved it enough to tweet! πŸ™‚

      1. I love to tweet and I love your writing πŸ™‚

        1. Aw, you are very sweet. πŸ™‚

  19. The imagery in this was fabulous! πŸ™‚

  20. “When I am bound?” Hmmm.

  21. Just kidding. Love it.

    1. Lol love your sense of humor. πŸ˜‰

      1. Meow…

  22. Really wonderful. Perfect in every way. I love the dichotomy of light and dark. Inspiring.

    1. Thank you so much Gigi! πŸ™‚

Very beautiful. A quatern…..been dreaming of it.

    1. To dream of quaterns…what a lovely thought. πŸ™‚

        πŸ™‚

  24. I have no idea what a Quaturn is but the poem is absolutely beautiful! Great job!

    1. It is actually quite a simple form that I will be explaining in greater detail tomorrow with another example and challenge. I’m glad you enjoyed this! πŸ™‚

  25. What’s left to say?! I’ll just “second” all the other comments! I enjoy your poetry and applaud your teaching. Way to go!

    Ron

    1. Thank you so much! I am so happy you enjoy my poetry and attempts at teaching. πŸ™‚

  26. I am completely ignorant of Quaterns. Please school me:) I like the flow..

    1. I will be posting written instructions on the quatern tomorrow in a challenge along with another example. πŸ™‚

      1. I haven’t the aptitude nor ability to write poetry.. I leave that for the master word artists.

        1. You do not have to be a master word artist to write poetry as long as you have a desire to write it. Perhaps it is desire more so than aptitude/ability that is lacking.

  27. The rhythmic groove of this poem has my soul dancing in delight! πŸ™‚

    1. Dancing is good for the soul! πŸ™‚

  28. I don’t normally like rhyme but this is exceptionally beautiful. The rhyme enhances the cadence and the echo of lines strengthens the feeling. Really good.

    1. Thank you so much. Rhymes are not everyone’s cup of tea, but sometimes it just depends on the flavor of the tea. πŸ™‚

  29. I love it. A powerful piece of work. It moves the strong current of my emotions in a lunar way.

    1. That is such a lovely comment to make. Thank you very kindly. πŸ™‚

      1. Well deserved and you are welcome. I bookmarked it to share on a future blog post.

  30. The movement in your words makes this piece phenomenal accompanied by the physical movement of the refrain in each stanza. You capture the fact of life’s ups and downs in magical strokes and leave me utterly satisfied with this struggle by the last couplet. Mesmerizing!

    1. You make me feel like my words are wholly embraced and appreciated with the comments you make. Thank you so much, Shainbird, for always being so encouraging and supportive. πŸ™‚

  31. I must be a total depressive! I found it to be a reflection of the darkness and light that comes from being in despair to then rising above it. ‘When I am bound’ by depression I can see nothing. ‘A spinning ship’ being the vessel that submerges me in a whirpool of down, down, down. But then the light! Wondrous! Optimism! Belief in life!
    Yup, total depressive me. πŸ™‚
This is great, Cubby, on all the levels that it can be interpreted.x

    1. That is a completely logical interpretation of the poem. I don’t think it makes you a depressive but rather very in tune with your emotional states. πŸ™‚

  32. I love the cadence of this poem, Cubby! It has such a great rhythm to it. And I found the poem very uplifting.

    1. Thank you so much, Miranda. I am so happy you found it be uplifting. πŸ™‚

  33. Ok, Cubby, you just gave me chills..c’mon! πŸ™‚

    1. Maybe put on a sweater? That’s what I’m always told to do when I say I have the chills. πŸ˜›

      1. Ur obnoxious! …I like that. πŸ˜€

        1. Definition of obnoxious: unpleasant in a way that makes people feel offended, annoyed, or disgusted.

Wait until I hork a few hairballs on you and then you can call me that. πŸ˜‰

          1. I guess my passive aggressive side was sneaking out without my knowledge! This is what happens when a lesser poet (me) reads another poet’s superior work (you). While you may not be “obnoxious,” according to the dictionary definition, you are at the least sarcastic…but you do it with humility, so all’s good. Just keep up the great writing, and we’ll all continue being impressed. πŸ™‚

            1. Lol yes, I can be a tad sarcastic sometimes *sheepish grin*. And I don’t consider you to be a lesser poet in the least! Pish posh. You write beautiful poems. πŸ™‚

              1. Wasn’t fishing for a complement, but thanks. I think it is quite obvious that you have an extraordinary skill, and I would declare that to anyone. Lately, I have just been too busy to focus on writing (graduate school, internship, and baby on the way). Thanks for the kind words and for reminding me the beauty that can be shared through written verse!

                1. Juggling school, marriage, baby preparations…you are indeed very busy! I hope everything goes smoothly with these milestones in your life! πŸ™‚

  34. Beautiful, with a positive feel. I really like this format/structure!

    1. Thank you so much! I’m so glad you like the form! πŸ™‚

  35. When I read this poem, I got the feeling there might be a challenge to follow so I thought I’d get a jump on it! πŸ™‚ So here’s my Quatern.

The Road To Heaven – A Quatern

As we walk the road to heaven
    Everyday dawns a new lesson
Pride’s death is our tale of woe
When we surrender and let go

To rid ourselves of the leaven
As we walk the road to heaven
Willingly we must heed His call
As He lifts us from the fall

To be courageous and be strong
    Standing against the enemy’s throng
As we walk the road to heaven
Knowing our hearts He will strengthen

Sometimes He will let us stumble
To keep us ever so humble
And grateful that He is sovereign
As we walk the road to heaven.

    1. Hehe you totally jumped the gun on me. I schedule my posts to go off while I’m sleeping, so it depends on when I get up in the morning before I can add anything to the challenge post. You did a fantastic job with this form! πŸ™‚

  36. Lorraine Marie Reguly October 9, 2013 — 12:13 am

Oh, you just know that I’ll be reblogging the rules to this when you post them… πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you kindly, Celestine. You have the most beautiful name. πŸ™‚
