The trick is wanting what you have
To have the things you want
And not to let desire
Become a dreadful taunt.
For gratefulness has power
To change your life and view,
But you must learn to use it well
For wishes to come true.
Happy Thanksgiving! 🙂
Very nice Cubby. Thanks for sharing this
Thank you also for reading and commenting. 🙂
You are welcome
Wonderful “augurio” is it then Thanksgiving in Canada? Then i must send you some special Thanksgiving lasagna! 🙂
I never knew lasagna was part of a Thanksgiving menu! 🙂
In Italy…Lasagna is party food! 🙂
So true
I am so glad you think so. 🙂
Excellent Cubby x
Thank you kindly. 🙂
Its fantastic how you played with the words 😀
I like to play with things. 🙂
Hi Cubby, gratitude is a wonderful thing to express, especially to friends, I have done the gratitude letters and know how uplifting it can be. Great poem, loved it.
Hi Michael (is it okay to call you that?). Your lovely thoughts are very much appreciated. I’m so happy you enjoyed the poem. 🙂
Thanks Cubby, and it is my name, and it is fine, please call me Michael
loved this poem. thank you!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
A very powerful message, indeed. Delivered with your regular aplomb. Perfect in my eyes, succinct and profound.
And I would be keen to hear your further thoughts on the first half of this poem…
The first half of the poem is about focus and the role it plays in one’s happiness. Focusing too much on what we do not have can make us very unhappy, especially when these are material items that we can well do without. Unhappiness itself can become a negative focus that detracts from everything we have, like family, friends, etc., in which we could find great happiness. Wanting what you have is a way of realizing that you already have everything that you need and so much more. 🙂
Reblogged this on 42 Days Younger than Kylie and commented:
Cubby is onto something here. Wise words indeed.
Clever Cubby:) “The trick is want what you have.” Oh yeah….
And some people say cats can’t do tricks. 😉
Ditto that,
Wonderful, Cubby! I agree that one of the key components of happiness is an attitude of gratitude.
You totally get it. That makes me super happy. 🙂
Happy thanks giving to you, too! I wish that wishes always come true, but they seldom do. Excellent piece…
Well, this kind of wishing is a little different…like looking back to a time when you felt hopeless and remembering that you wished your life was completely different and realizing that it is now. It is about remembering all those wishes you made in the past that have come true in some way without you realizing it.
How sweet, Cubby, and full of light. Enjoyed it muchly 🙂 as always x
Aw, what a lovely comment. Thank you so much. 🙂
Straight from the heart xxx
Great reminder. I really should get back to it— I used to keep a gratitude journal. I would write ten things I was grateful for in the day. I think these things in nightly prayer- but writing is more powerful I think!
Yes, I think writing is more powerful as it is more tangible and requires more concentration. A gratitude journal is a wonderful thing to write in daily. 🙂
I’m guilty of wishing for more when I should be grateful and content with what I have. I TRY to appreciate the fact that I’m so much better off than a huge part of the population, both health-wise and financially, but I keep looking at those who are better off and start wishing again…
As long as it does not make you unhappy, then I don’t see the harm. It can be a rather slippery slope once you start down that path though in my opinion.
You hit the nail on the head. Gratitude is so, so important.
And Happy Thanksgiving to you! 🙂
So glad you get it! It can be the key to happiness if you allow it to be. 🙂
What a philosophical feline you are, and I do love cats so!
Cat lovers are the best kinds of people in my books! 😉
So true! Have possession not have them have you.. Thanksgiving?
Hehe yes, it is Thanksgiving Day in Canada. 🙂
Excellent provebial poem Cubby!
Thank you kindly, Ry! Is it okay to call you that?
Absolutely! In the past I asked old friends to call me Ry, but it didn’t stick, and I stayed Ryan with them. I’d prefer it stick with my new friends, so it’s more than alright with me 🙂
Very nice and Happy Thanksgiving to you too! 🙂
😀
That is a powerful view! Happy Thanksgiving! Grateful to know you!
As I am also to know you! 🙂
What a nice poem to freshen the day of Monday.
Happy thanksgiving.
P.S I just posted a new blog. Please read it, it will blow you away…
Based on a true story about what happen to me.
Lovely…:)
Thank you kindly. 🙂
Amen!! :). Well written, Sweet Friend!
Aw, I’m so glad you think so. 🙂
Beautiful as always, and an important lesson too….
Were you coveting something in particular when you wrote this?
Nope, it’s just part of what I believe and how I try to live my life in general. 🙂
I believe it to but it doesn’t stop me coveting! But I keep it in check. I have so much more than I ever dreamed I could have, both in terms of material possessions, and more importantly in terms of love so I am very lucky (and grateful)
As long as it doesn’t interfere with your happiness, I think it’s okay. 🙂
phew… that’s alright then!
Oh I love, love, love this–I’m very BIG on gratitude, when I learned that secret–Everything changed for the Better!! God bless you today.
I think gratitude is definitely at the top of the list when it comes to things to be big on. So glad you enjoyed the poem! 🙂
Wonderful!
Thank you kindly! 🙂
Words of wisdom indeed, great read cubby!
I’m so glad you think so! 🙂
a powerful view, indeed. a simple but transcendent view, when we realize we already have most of what we’ll ever need in the love of our family and friends. a wonderful poem Cubby, ty.
Yes, I think so. We often search for happiness in all the wrong places, but we are surrounded by it and can tap it if we know how to. 🙂
Loved this. “For gratefulness has power” — yes, yes it does. Great reminder to be more thankful for what we have, every day. Thanks so much for sharing this.

And thank you so much for your lovely thoughts. 🙂
Cubby, a lovely poem! I believe desire is a good feeling and motivator to have. If a person has no desire then they will achieve nothing. One has to have a desire to make a difference, to be the best, to write a lovely poem, to take a great photo, to be a good person, a great Mom, etc. However, once the desire/motivation gets you what you want, then you need to be grateful for what you have, what you have achieved and be aware of and willing to share and pass on the benefits of said desires.
Desire can definitely be healthy and motivating. The desire to be productive, to love, to have and support a family, to protect, to lead an active lifestyle and be healthy…all of these desires are wonderful desires. The desire to have as much as someone else when one already has more than enough, however, is not a very healthy desire in my opinion, although it can make one work harder to achieve material things. Excessive material desire can lead to great unhappiness.
At once simple………….and…………profound. Excellent Cubby!
Ron
Thank you so much. You are too kind. 🙂
Brain rippling and heartfelt beauty in each word makes this piece a life lesson. Happy Thanksgiving Cubby 🙂
Thank you, Shainbird! To be able to embrace Thanksgiving Day everyday in our hearts would be a beautiful thing. 🙂
This is so true, madame. In the end, it’s just our view of life! Happy Thanksgiving from Philippines!
I’m a madame? I feel so old. 😦 Sniff. Good thing I’m stuffed with so much dessert from Thanksgiving dinner to care. 😀
Hi Cubby,
just leaving a note here to express my gratitude for you stopping by my humble blog. 🙂
Your message in this poem rings all too familiar. The engines of neediness, be they emotional, material and so on are hard to restrain. Such is the obsessive nature of mind. All the more reason to listen and be still.
Yes, the mind can be dangerously obsessive, which can lead to vicious cycles that can create chemical imbalances further perpetuating obsessiveness. Redirection and focus on positive things is not an easy task/ability, but it is one that can be learned and used to overwrite negative thoughts. 🙂
Thought of your poem when I saw this, so sharing it with you 🙂
What a beautiful video. Thank you so much for sharing it with me. 🙂
Love this! Gratitude is so important =)
Yes, I think so too. Glad you agree! 🙂
I had to read this several times to let the message take root. Beautiful sentiment we could all benefit from. x
Yes, the wording is not as clear as it could be because I didn’t want to rhyme with “have”. My apologies for this lack of clarity.
What you like, missus? My lack of clarity. Nothing unclear in your poem. I read it several times to let its message sink in. Feeling a little disillusioned at the moment and needed the reminder. As, usual, it is perfectly composed and full of insightful understanding. And I needed that. Of course, I just had to read it again to figure what you were referring to. I see no issue. Other than that I may need to print it off and hang it on my fridge door. In bold type. For me. And my gang!
Confidence in your own mastery, Cubby, at all times.x
Oh wise and thought provoking Cubby. Thank you for yet another important message 🙂
Hardly wise, but if I can provoke thought, I am a happy kitty. 🙂
Happy Thanksgiving! So well expressed in your poem.
I’m so glad you think so! Hope you had a good Thanksgiving with your loved ones! 🙂
