When It Breaks
Trust must be handled very carefully
For when it breaks it’s never quite the same.
Intact, it’s priceless, though you cannot see,
Trust must be handled very carefully.
The smallest cracks begin in secrecy
That grow in guilt and shatter homes in shame.
Trust must be handled very carefully
For when it breaks it’s never quite the same.
The Challenge
Instructions on writing a triolet:
- There are a total of 8 lines with two different repeating lines:
- The 1st, 4th, and 7th lines repeat.
- The 2nd and 8th lines repeat.
- The rhyme scheme is ABaAabAB. The capital letters represent the repeating lines.
- Commonly written with 8 syllables per line, as in The Tiger Knight, or 10 syllables, as in When It Breaks.
Here I will highlight the patterns:
Trust must be handled very carefully
For when it breaks it’s never quite the same.
Intact, it’s priceless, though you cannot see,
Trust must be handled very carefully.
The smallest cracks begin in secrecy
That grow in guilt and shatter homes in shame.
Trust must be handled very carefully
For when it breaks it’s never quite the same.
This is an excellent form for building upon a particular theme or subject. Once you have your two repeating lines, you only have 3 more lines to write! The challenge is in fitting everything together so it makes sense.
Have fun with it and I can’t wait to see what you can do with this form! As always, your poems will be added to the challenge post along with the links to your blog and poem.
If you like what you read, please follow the link in the title and “like” it there too. 🙂

In anger night unfolds her sheath
just to cover our nakedness
lapping this gleaming decadence
In anger night unfolds her sheath
ashamed to see the evidence
which the stars sadly bear witness
In anger night unfolds her sheath
Just to cover our nakedness

I fear the rain, for I love his fierce touch
And the comfort I find in his whisper
But after the storm I shiver so much
I fear the rain, for I love his fierce touch
On the friction my fists grasp in their clutch
So abandoned when the skies turn crisper
I fear the rain for I love his fierce touch
And the comfort I find in his whisper

Bright sun glare catches you right in the eyes.
Traffic heads home as they rush out of town.

Shoveling sand to make time last

Warriors
Do not dismiss, do not forget:
All of us are warriors inside;
Not all battles produce bloodshed,
Do not dismiss, do not forget.
I can smile, you laugh, and yet
Our mind is filled with endless strife;
Do not dismiss, do not forget –
All of us are warriors inside.

I long to drink of that illumined Thought
That shall transform my dark night into day.
This imprisoned mind, I want it no more
I long to drink of that illumined Thought:
A ferry straight to eternity’s shore.
So dissatisfied with this mortal play
I long to drink of that illumined Thought
That shall transform my dark night into day

Like Sunshine On a Cloudy Day
Like sunshine on a cloudy day
Every time you smile at me
Blessing me when you look my way

And my captive heart is set free
Like sunshine on a cloudy day
Every time you smile at me

Autumn is a special season;
Just a glimpse of heaven’s glory.
Pumpkins bright and leaves of crimson;
Autumn is a special season.
We now rejoice for good reason;
As each breeze whispers His story.
Autumn is a special season;
Just a glimpse of heaven’s glory.
As the winds grow colder each day,
Upon the drying leaves, I dance.
God’s world a fiery array;
As the winds grow colder each day.
Pirouetting in God’s ballet;
It’s our beautiful fall romance.
As the winds grow colder each day,
Upon the drying leaves, I dance.

Grey fishermen with silent nets
trawl, deep beneath an autumn moon
and from the shore are silhouettes.
Grey fishermen with silent nets
cast long, to haul while darkness whets
the needle-points that fade too soon.
Grey fishermen with silent nets
trawl deep, beneath an autumn moon.
The swollen heartbeat of the tide
compels the fragile: rise and fall,
while plunder rolls from side to side.
The swollen heartbeat of the tide,
where charcoal sea and sky collide,
stays faithful to the siren’s call.
The swollen heartbeat of the tide
compels the fragile rise and fall.
Ensnared in shawls they reel them home,
the daughters of the sand and shale.
With wine-dark eyes and salt-stained comb
ensnared in shawls, they reel them home;
these tethered brides of spray and foam.

ensnared in shawls, they reel them home
the daughters of the sand and shale.

Oh my goodness Cubby a poetic challenge. Hmmm and a good one at that.
I did like yours by the way.
I hope the “Hmmm” means that you are considering trying out the form. 🙂
A lady of many talents, another good one Cubby
Aw, you are too kind. Glad you enjoyed this. 🙂
Are you reading my mind Cubby? Today it was a toss up for a poem in hope or one on trust. You have hit the nail on the head here with this and I do like the form. 🙂
I wrote this last week and scheduled it to be posted today, so I think you were the one reading my mind. 😉
🙂 So it would seem 🙂
How fragile trust is! Good write…and I almost commented with a quatern, but figured that would be stealing your subject matter. Now I have TWO challenges to do!
You can comment with a quatern. And I don’t think anyone has a monopoly on the subject of trust. If you are inspired, by all means, please write!
Trust allows you t be free. Trusting yourself is the most important trust of all. Lovely.
Ah, for sure. Well said Gigi. 🙂
Excellent! 🙂
Aw, thank you. I’m so glad you think so. 🙂
Another beautiful poem and the challenge! Well done teacher…
Hardly a teacher…more of a relayer of found information… 😉
I absolutely loved this. How very true. Seems like a difficult form to tie together. You did it brilliantly as usual.
It is a little tricky, but it wouldn’t be much of a challenge if it was easy, right? 😉
Hrmpf….true, true!! Now it has to be done!! 🙂 You are one tough cookie, Cubby!! xxxx
Absolutely true!! Thank you.
And thank you for your kind words. 🙂
Wonderful as always, Sonya. I shall give it a try!
You did an excellent job of the challenge! 🙂
I’m going to try this challenge Cubby, wish me luck 🙂
Good luck! Can’t wait to read it. 🙂
Thank you, headed to the tool shed to get to work on it 🙂
Here is the link to my 0post, Sonya. 🙂 http://readinpleasure.wordpress.com/2013/10/16/poet-at-play-decadence-a-triolet/
Handled very carefully 🙂
Lol yes 😉
Reblogged this on Bastet and Sekhmet's Library and commented:
A new great challenge from Cubby!
Cool…can’t wait to try this out…but now, I’m fixing dinner for hubby…and got to run!
Yes, hubby’s dinner takes priority. 🙂
So understanding…was late getting started 🙂 loved your poem…and so true, once trust has been broken, there’s no glue that can put it back together properly
I wrote a little triolet with rhyme 🙂
And what a wonderful triolet it is! 🙂
🙂
I like this, especially the topic, trust. Excellent challenge!
Hope you give it a try! 🙂
well done! now I must try one too….we’ll see what happens, you know how I have trouble following the rules….a pattern of my life! lol
You say that, and yet your challenge attempts always come out beautifully. Your life may have a different pattern, but it is also beautiful. 🙂
thats a nice way to put it, a different pattern…hahahaha I love your challenges! 🙂
This is fantastic – both the poem and the challenge. It sounds quite hard – how did you decide where to start? Did you decide the repeating lines first? I am going to return to all of your challenges at some point, I promise!
I start with the most important lines, which are the repeating lines, as they will make up 5 of the 8 lines of the entire poem. After you have the 2 repeating lines figured out, you can figure out which 3 can work within this frame. No rush on the challenges, Pooky! Whenever you have time. 🙂
It sounds so simple. You have to write so little but I remember from writing the Kyrielle sonnet that incorporating repeating lines is surprisingly hard!
Hi Sonya! Thanks for the likes and the follow. You write so beautifully! My response: http://musingsofasunchild.wordpress.com/2013/10/16/triolet-challenge/
I absolutely love what you did with the form! Terrific job. 🙂
Beautiful, thoughtful piece.
Thank you so much, Chess. 🙂
Here’s mine – http://heronthereeverywhere.us/2013/10/16/gridlock-a-triolet/
This was a wonderful triolet! I love how you took such a mundane subject and turned it into such a beautiful poem. 🙂
Here you go Cubby http://syl65.wordpress.com/2013/10/16/sand-trap/
Absolutely love it. 🙂
🙂
Amen to that!
🙂
This is so beautiful, I’m inspired to try my hand at a Triolet. Hmm, now I need to come up with a subject…
That’s always the trickiest part of the writing process! I’m looking forward to reading it when you are done! 🙂
Wise words, Cubby, conveyed so well. Your talent never ceases to amaze. So many poetic forms and all handled beautifully.x
You are too kind, as always. 🙂
Just honest. :)x

Hi Rexie! Love your triolet! You did a smashing job. 🙂
I´m getting scared thinking all the things I have to take into consideration. But I like the challenge, I´ll take you up on it, and I´ll be much better than you.
P.S. You should start on-line classes in poetry.
You sure can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk? 😉
I told you, I´m not scared of you. I just need time.
I am very patient. 🙂
Still working on it, gotta catch up on a lot of things.
all poems are great.
I think so too! 🙂
Hi Cubby, I wrote one too. It is at http://saleemdreams.wordpress.com/2013/10/17/like-sunshine-on-a-cloudy-day/ . 🙂
You wrote an absolutely beautiful triolet! Love it. 🙂
Thank you so much for your kind words.
Hi, Cubby, here’s the link to my triolet. x_x Triolet http://t.co/SL2CTgE5CP
I was so happy to see two triolets! You did a really wonderful job with them. 🙂
I did it! I did it!
http://pookypoetry.wordpress.com/2013/10/17/self-belief-a-triolet/
( I did add a sneaky extra ‘that’ in there (4th line) because I think the poem flows better with it. What do you think?)
The “that” in the 4th line works very nicely, and I think the poem does flow better with it. Very good call! Rules are meant to be broken. 🙂
Ha ha indeed. That’s what my children constantly tell me 😉
Your name is Sandra? I now need to reinvent you in my mind. You definitely weren’t a Sandra. That’s a very masculine looking cat you’ve chosen as your avatar you see….
ROFLMAO my name is Sonya, and Cubby is not a masculine-looking cat!
I’m just grasping at straws as to why in my head you were a man… bear with me. It’s going to take a little getting used to.
You’re not the only one. I never thought I had a masculine personality, but I’m not overly feminine either. Tee hee. 😉
People used to make the same assumption about me too. It’s funny the conclusions we draw from thin air!
Hehe as long as we know what we are, I think we’re alright! 🙂
Where does the name Cubby come from?
Cubby is the name of the cat you see beside the name. 🙂
Ah I see, it’s a really cute name 🙂
Trust is the foundation, upon which all stands; break trust and you don’t have much left.
I enjoyed this poem Cubby! I copied the challenge instructions to save for when I have some time. Thank you for posting them! I enjoy your blog so very much!
And I enjoy your blog very much also! You can do the challenges whenever you have time. 🙂

Information is meant to be shared, so I am very happy that you re-blog my challenges. Your submission is wonderful! I absolutely love it. 🙂
Thank you. I am so happy that you feel that way. I’m not a great poet, but I try. I created my blog on a whim, because not everyone likes poetry. I took a survey on my regular blog and most of my readers did NOT want to see poetry on it.
I’ve a few more poems that I have yet to input into my laptop. I’ve got so many things going on that it was easier to re-blog your challenges. Since my blog’s name is Poetry Perfected, it infers a high standard. You definitely meet this with your poetry, Cubby. Thanks for all you do!
I will be reblogging more in the future!
PS. Where do you find the time to write?
The writing part of the writing process usually doesn’t take a long time; it is inspiration that can take awhile in coming. Once I have the idea in my head, I can write a poem quite quickly, but without the inspiration, I find it very difficult. I squeeze in time whenever I can to mull it around in my mind.
Beautiful words of wisdom wrapped in lovely form!
Thank you so much, Shainbird. 🙂
Oh so true about trust, once broken it makes it hard to trust people all over again
I’m rather sad that you seem to understand this so well.
you have no idea
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this post with all its many contributors. Your work here makes me think I should give it a try – doing a triolet, I mean. Your encouragement is obviously a help to budding poets. Great stuff!
I think you should definitely give it a try if you feel so inclined. It is a rather nifty form to work with. I am so happy you enjoyed this challenge post and all the wonderful triolets tackled by brave bloggers. 🙂
Trust needs assurance of good faith. But even crooks need it to prolong their wickedness.
This may be a wonderful poetic exercise, Cubby!! I saved it in a word file, so I can try it soon. Thank you.
Definitely give it a try! It’s a lot simpler than some of the other forms. 🙂
True, yet not so simple. It may be simple for you, a craftsman in this. 🙂
Write two or three and you’ll be an expert at it. 😉
🙂 🙂
Loved your poems and the challenge. I too took up the gauntlet with a poem called 48 Percent Life;
into the loaded silence, I write
all about a 48 percent life,
while the globe spins on a knife
into the loaded silence, I write
as i watch, gross injustices ignite
my body immobile, thoughts in flight

all about a 48 percent life.

oh, I am sorry…it works for me, but I am new to this…how about
https://philldoran.wordpress.com/2019/01/07/triolet-for-fishermen/
it was this(these)
Triolet for Fishermen
Grey fishermen with silent nets
trawl, deep beneath an autumn moon
and from the shore are silhouettes.
Grey fishermen with silent nets
cast long, to haul while darkness whets
the needle-points that fade too soon.

These are stunning! You are an expert at the art of writing triolets. Amazing. 🙂
That is kind of you: I cannot claim expertise (and would not try to) but what I would add to your thread, for those endeavoring to write in this form, is – as best possible – when you start out, stick with one and two syllable words. They are easier to work with. Just a thought.
Great advice! Thank you! 🙂

Hey Cubby, nice to see you again. Thanks for introducing me to yet another new form:

This is an excellent triolet! Your writing is well suited to these forms. 🙂
Thank you, thank you! It’s a poem I wasn’t expecting to write this morning, so it’s a win no matter what.
I love win-win scenarios. 🙂
I really enjoyed this form! Thanks for the inspiration, Cubby.
