Dreams of a Chimney Sweeper

Dreams like water-colored paintings
Wash away when days are raining.
Clouded thoughts are always saying,
Stop the nonsense, quit complaining!
What’s the point in contemplating?
Can’t afford the price of playing.

Those awake will stop their sweeping
On a path where dreams are sleeping
Where they’ll wander speculating,
In the end still hesitating.
Listen to your years of training,
Though they may be entertaining,

Dreams like water-colored paintings
Wash away when days are raining.

Chim chim cher-ee, chim chim cher-ee, chim chim cher-oo!
   – Dick Van Dyke (Mary Poppins)

Um, so, I guess he used chalk instead of watercolors… *whiskers twitch*… I claim poetic licence.

Thank you to all who participated in the prompt.  The responses were marvelous, inspiring me to finish this poem, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading all of them!  🙂

  1. The poem turned out quite well. Thank you for sharing these images of dreams.

    1. And thank you for sharing your kind words with me. 🙂

  2. Ah! You expanded this into a wonderful story! (Timely, considering the new Mary Poppins movie is out!) And thanks for the prompt. Haven’t written anything new for awhile, so it was fun to shake off the dust.

    1. I will try to post a prompt once a week, if only just to read more of your wonderful writing. 😉

      1. Guess I’d better oil the gears up, now.
        They’ve nearly rusted in place.

        1. Lol doesn’t seem too rusty to me 🙂

  3. I can picture you singing and doing a little dance to this. Wonderful!

    1. I would never want to torture you with my singing or dancing, but I’m glad you liked my version of the prompt! 🙂

      1. You’re welcome and I’ve seen and heard worse! 😄

  4. You cheated. You wrote more than 12 lines.

Thanks for the prompt. I haven’t participated in one before. I should try that more often. It’s interesting the different places people can go. I went depressing. You went fun and whimsical. Nicely done.

    1. Lol I wasn’t counting the first two. Ah, caught at my own game hehehe. I’m glad you gave this a try! Yours was really great. 🙂

  5. Lovely poem! 💗 It was fun to share with you!

  6. I’m enjoying your poems thank you! x
