Because It’s Fun

I do not always
Have to rhyme;
In fact, I’ve written
Free verse too,
But even then
With so much time,
I’ve only written
Just a few.
No matter how
I try to stop
The rhymes from
Coming out today,
They’ll wriggle free
Until they plop
Into my mind and
There they’ll stay
Until I sigh
And let them go
To let them choose
Their vetted seat
Where happily
They’ll set to row
My raft of words
To every beat;
Past verbs and nouns
And synonyms,
Around the bend
Of every line,
They’ll grit their teeth
And work their limbs
To show me how
Their strengths combine;
And if they stumble
On their way
And miss perhaps
A beat or two,
The message they
Will not betray…

And that’s why free verse?
Only few.

  4. Great use of fun! I enjoy writing poetry that ryhmes, but sometimes I venture down a different trail for some free verse.

    1. I like reading free verse, but it doesn’t come as naturally to me as rhyming does. Venturing down different trails can lead to wonderful places. 🙂

  5. The thing is that you write for yourself, firstly. What you write and how you write it… all is good – Great Words, excellent order put in are they. G:)

  6. I prefer rhyming as well….it lends itself to a more flowing read. This WAS a fun read!

  8. Rhyme all the time.

    When I’m
    Walking
    Talking
    Thinking
    and
    In the
    Bathroom
    Stinking!

    I’ll subside in the tide until she’s lied
    For the finally funniest last time;
    Then without woe, I’ll let her know
    That I wrote this just to rhyme.

  11. I caught myself singing to your free verse poem. That is brilliant to have one sing to one’s writing. I love this so much. 🙂
