Imagine how the
Earth would look
With people crammed
In every nook:
There’d be no room
For everyone;
We’d pile right up
Into the sun.
There’d be no food
And so much pain;
You’d beg for just
A single grain.
You’d grow so old
And lose your might
With hope and purpose
Out of sight.
Is this a better
World to you?
Run by a large
Skeletal crew?
Or can you see
The reason why,
Why all of us
Must one day die:
The earth was never
Meant to hold
A population
Uncontrolled.
I hope this makes
A bit of sense,
That life is really
An expense,
A debt that must
Be duly paid
By death in
Everlasting trade.
So live the life
You have right now
And when you make
That final bow,
You’ll know that death
Is just a way
For life to see
Another day.

I like the way you presented death as a necessity for rebirth. I don’t think that makes it any more appealing. It doesn’t matter how logical and poetic you make it, most people will still prefer not to die.

I find this perspective of death a confirming one – a necessity for life, part of the everyday cycle and equilibrium of our planet. Tiny parts of such a large cosmos that we are. I enjoyed the rhythm of this poem too.
And by confirming, my auto-correct (and me) means comforting!!
We are on the same page then as I also find it comforting to view death in this way. 🙂

I loved it..people are afraid of death. Once they come to an understanding that death is not to be feared life will be more beautiful.
It is difficult not to be afraid of death when life is all we have truly known, but I agree with you completely that “life will be more beautiful” when we do not live in fear of death.

Nature has its checks and balances, and I guess aging, disease, and violence (war, murder) is all part of it.Reminds me of an old science-fiction show I saw where the people on one planet were legally required to turn themselves in for euthanasia at a particular age because science had “solved’ aging, disease, and violence.The downside of utopia. (I think it was Star Trek) Death is inevitable, but i wish suffering and violence could be an option we can choose not to endure. I do home care, and watching people suffer with infirmities is painful in itself, yet it HAS helped me see death as a blessing. Your write is a beautiful poem about an often ugly and inevitable occurrence. Brava
I agree that it would be wonderful if “suffering and violence” were things we did not have to endure. However, until the day comes when all of humanity can unite in mutual understanding and compassion, it is an unfortunate reality. I can only hope that there will be such a day.

I know NASA is trying to get us humans to Mars – but even still how safe is Mars for humans?

Exactly. That’s what they would need to figure out for humans. If landing on Mars is interesting enough, what about the Wi-fi? Humans would tear each other apart because we’re so attached to the monolith tech.

I agree. Death is a necessary part of the life cycle. Now with longer life spans and over population, we’re running out of space/renewal resources even with death factored in. I believe in death with dignity not forcing people to live in cancerous pain or vegetative coma state, calling that “living”. Letting go of fear of death is I think, beautiful.
Even death has a purpose, and being afraid does not alter our longevity. “Death with dignity” is a concept that should be accepted by all nations. Well said. 🙂

Very true…I don’t think it’s going make any sense to live forever, I think I’ll run out of ideas or grow tired of doing the same things, though there may not be diseases and accidents that cut short life as we know it, but our pain will take a different shape
