The Heavy Hand of Man

Before the world
Knew how to die,
The earth was ageless
Like the sky;
It knew no grief
And had no fear
Of pain or death
Or sorrows near.
And then one day
Mankind was born –
A seed was planted
On that morn –
A warning spread
Throughout the land:
Beware the heavy
Hand of Man.
For when he came
He did not see
The beauty and
The purity;
He sought to take
And never give,
He sought to kill
Instead of live.
And when the first
Sad creature died,
A shadow to the
Earth was tied;
A darkness rose
From deep within –
The birth of
Unremitting sin.

  15. I agree with the negligence and exploitation bits. Tragic. But not Original Sin.

    1. No, definitely not original sin. Purely metaphorically speaking in terms of man’s effects on nature and the environment.

  16. Well said, Sonya. Especially loved the following verses:
    “Beware the heavy / Hand of Man. / For when he came / He did not see / The beauty and / The purity;”

    And now, we must pay the price for our “unremitting sin.”

    1. And what a heavy price that is for the entire world to bear.

  17. but also the birth of hope…

    I hear a cat with a tiger’s roar!

        What immortal hand or eye,ย
        Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

        1. And when thy heart began to beat,
          What dread hand? & what dread feet?

          William Blake took poetic licence with the hands and feet, but I can see why. “What dread paw? & what dread paw?” doesn’t have the same impact.

          1. whenmarsmetsaturn February 18, 2019 — 9:18 pm

            Hehe ๐Ÿ™‚ paws do lack the same dread factor as hands and feet in one’s imagination… I, for one, am suddenly warming up to what dread paw (x2) Repeating phrases over and over again gives it an ancient flavour as well

            1. Most definitely. And put some claws on those paws, and they do become dreadful. ๐Ÿ™‚

              1. whenmarsmetsaturn February 18, 2019 — 10:14 pm

                Indeed, my scars can attest! The heavy hand of man might bribe the judge though. This post truth world may become a place of claws that are most gentle and soothing.

                1. Padded paws with sharpened claws make for fewer future flaws.
