Crossing Boundaries

Someone I knew once said to me,
Full of very good intent,
“I think that I should clarify
What it is I truly meant
When I said you are like a cat,
It means you’re similar
But not the same as you can see
You clearly have no fur.
I have no problem with pretend
When we are all alone,
But when we’re out in public
Won’t you please throw me a bone.
Like when we’re out for dinner,
They all think it’s a gag
When you ask that all your
Leftovers be put in a kitty bag.
Waiters look at me and ask,
‘And a doggy one for you?’
And then I end up growling at them,
‘No, I’ll chew a shoe.’
You have to set clear boundaries.
I will not sit and stay
If you cannot act properly.
Well, what have you to say?”

I replied, “Of course, I understand
Your concerns I have them too…
You see, you’re really not a dog
But a silly human too!”  Copyright 2013 © Sonya Annita Song

  1. You are very clever just at it should be!

    1. Ah, if only…I think I should be a cat.

  2. How wonderfully clever, the rhymes roll of the tongue so easy and sweet. I love how I can read this to my son, like the Twirls and Swirls one and I am sure he will enjoy it and learn something from it as well.

    1. Hehe I hope your son does enjoy it. I love to hear that some of my poems can appeal to children as well. 🙂

  3. LOL Once a cat…always a cat…purrrrr. Such fun.

    1. I may have to make you an honorary cat. You have a great purr.

  4. Do you really ask for a kitty bag?:)x

    1. I’ll leave that up to you to figure out. 😉

    1. I forgot to mention my husband calls me a squirrel but I look rather much like a lion lol

      1. A lion squirrel. You’d be the undisputed king of your squirreldom.

  5. Hi! I’ve nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award! Have a lovely day!

    1. Why thank you kindly! That’s very kind of you indeed. Such a consideration is greatly appreciated. 🙂

  6. Presumably you don’t lick your own bottom in public, either.

  7. This is a good one that suits any age. Also its an easy read for people that are just getting into poetry and don’t like the complicated stuff. I really admire your work Cubby

    1. Many thanks. I really enjoy reading your work also. 🙂

  8. So true to life. I like as well as some of the comments made me laugh

    1. Yeah, there are some pretty cheeky commenters. 🙂

  9. Ah…of course kitty bags are well worth-while asking for totally apt and a bone for the dog too. The dog was a bit of a twit and definately with problem’s in regards to humour!

    1. It just goes to show that not everyone with a funny bone is necessarily funny.

      1. Or funny is an individualistic existential moot point. Question of taste…some people actually don’t like dark chocolate, can you imagine?

        1. The horror! Up to 85% is divine! After that, well…to each his/her own. 😛

  10. It is funny, and yet, I find there is more to it then just the rhymes. Or maybe I am reading too much into the literature of it.
Great work either way, cubby. A great cat you are!! 😉

    1. Thank you kindly. Purrrr. Whatever your interpretation of the poem is, that is part of the collaborative process of reading and writing. I create by writing, you process by reading, and then you recreate through interpretation. 🙂

      1. Truer words I haven’t heard.
But my favorite works remain to be those which on face value are plain yet can be dissected to deepest depths. You write like that. HENCE, your work has become a favorite!
And, purrrrr right back at you! 😉

  11. Thank you for bringing laughter to my morning 🙂

  12. This made me giggle. A lot. 😀

    1. I love people who know how to giggle! 🙂
