En Garde

The things I don’t know are shockingly big,
What I know is shockingly small;
One is an elephant spanning the globe,
The other, an ant on the crawl.

A master at fence, I guard myself well
From the facts that try to thrust through;
They often give up in bewildered awe
Of the parries an expert can do.

  1. Your writing is always so clever! It makes me smile πŸ™‚

    1. Haha, well, this is just my excuse for being a complete idiot when it comes to trivia. My brain doesn’t retain information very well. πŸ˜›

      1. LOL! You are very self-deprecating also πŸ™‚ I love your writing… look fwd to reading some more!

  2. Yes what nuttyblurt said!:-D

  3. I’ll tell you what I like about this poem: poetry and the Martial Art (which, I don’t know if it’s a common consideration, but I’ve always believed fencing to be a kind of Martial Art, something akin to bushido). This is pretty clever, and appealing most especially to my sense of…movement. I’m not sure if that’s the right word…but that’s the best one I can think of to get anywhere near what I’m trying to say. Very excellent piece!

    1. Perhaps kenjutsu would be more accurate than “bushido”…

      1. Your knowledge far exceeds mine in such things, if not all things (which is quite astoundingly clear after reading work). You credit me where credit is not due in that it is your own intelligence making my words seem more clever than they are.

  4. Lol, oh, gees, you sound like me a couple of days ago. When I said something similar, a friend said to me, something to the effect of, “Don’t ever claim you’ve made a mistake if it turns out well.” Probably nowhere near his exact words, but in the same spirit. So it seems clever. I think that illustrates at least some mastery of the art. I haven’t seen all of your work yet, but I’m willing to bet, being the gambler that I am, that you’ve an insight that leads to an ability to be an incredibly effective poet. Just my opinion, but not one I state lightly. πŸ™‚

    Still, humility is always a plus. That makes you, I think, an even greater poet. I’m happy to have stumbled upon your blog! πŸ™‚

    FYI…I have this really, really bad habit of being really longwinded when I become enthusiastic about something. It’s been a bane to many a blog, I think. :/ Be well, Cubby!

  5. So clever and humorous.x

    1. I’m just happy you didn’t call it a pathetic excuse for being a numbskull. πŸ™‚

      1. All this self-deprecating has to stop. Now! Talent, intellect, humour, rhythm, rhyme, insightful, provocative… I could go on. You’re a wizard with words. Smile graciously, bow and receive your due.
        Just saying.:)x
