Tell Me

Please, tell me again
How it was long ago;
I feel like I knew
Or I already know,
But time has a strange way
Of stealing what’s mine,
So tell me again,
Let my story untwine.

You can start at a time
Ere things disappeared
Without stopping until
The fog has all cleared,
So tell me why wires
Now grow on my head
Where cascades of black had
Once perched there instead.
And look at my hands,
See how frail they’ve become;
Skin’s wrinkled and loose
And there’s pain in my thumb.
I feel so confused
And my mouth is so dry,
So tell me the reasons,
The how and the why.
Why now in this wheelchair
Do I have to be?
What possibly, tragically,
Happened to me?

But more than all this,
Please, just tell me one thing:
Where’s the love of my life?
My summer and spring?
Why am I here
And he’s not by my side?
I remember how happy
I was as his bride.

So tell me before
It is time you must go,
Now where did my life
All just suddenly go?

This poem makes me think of how as we become older we lose our physical strengths, but we gain wisdom. We are not “God”, but I imagine that “God” is wisdom and has been eternally in the universe, so wise and pure and void of “humanly” faults. So as we age we too become like that, more pure, more wise and wildly beautiful. Thank you for starting my day so amazingly.

O my! The anguish the pain, the loss, wasted ado all so brilliantly summed up in your poem. This is a masterpiece ❤️

An unfortunate reality for so many. 😢

The finiteness of human existence and our helplessness as we slowly approach death it’s encapsulated in this poetry. It’s a beautiful piece

Yes it is. At 67 I’m becoming more and more aware of my own mortality. 🙂

Life feels like a series of ongoing challenges. I used to think it would get easier, but as my body changes and life stress keeps piling on…I feel nostalgic for all I took for granted in the past (good health and love).💖

    1. Cubby's avatar

Yes, I imagine it would be. Thank you.

Well, that was depressing. How do you make something so terrifying come across so hauntingly beautiful? Your poems are always so beautiful and thought-provoking. I’ve seen a lot of death in my life, but I’m so glad I’ve never had to deal with anything like that.

My grandmother suffered from some form of dementia (she was never diagnosed) and could no longer remember us near the end of her life, and I thought of her while writing it. I should have had a disclaimer at the beginning: “Reading this will most likely make you sad.”

      1. Nobbinmaug's avatar

        That’s horrible. I’m sorry.

        1. Cubby's avatar

Ah no, don’t be sorry. Reality happens whether we want it to or not.

          1. Nobbinmaug's avatar

It’s still sad and scary. Even more so because it is reality.

              1. Nobbinmaug's avatar

Of course it’s true. Everything I say is true, except the stuff that’s not. I’ve typed too much without including a joke. It’s time.

oh, this is so painful. I have worked with elderly and disabled, so this hits home. To see the loss in their eyes, the feeling of betrayal….

    1. Cubby's avatar

It’s an incredibly sad reality for some elderly, and even some not-so-elderly.

  13. thecabellobrothers's avatar

Such a sad reality for so many but you did a magnificent job in putting this experience into words for the world to understand. Thank you for sharing

It falls brutally short from the truth, but if I could even capture a fraction of its horror, then it is enough. Thank you so much for your lovely words.

It reminds me of an aphorism that says : “there comes an age at which there is no more science after that there has been science”. We all will fall into decay, but somehow, we’re just gonna be … different. It doesn’t necessarily imply suffering. But it certainly does for the people who used to be around us. Some mighty lines in the poem too. Well done.

    1. Cubby's avatar

Suffering is in the eye of the beholder, multiplying when it spreads ripples of misery. You seem to understand this when you say, “it certainly does for the people who used to be around this.”
