Unmasked

I cannot claim
I do not know
The reason why
Your tears now flow
In twin cascades
With no blockades,
No longer fit
For masquerades.
I saw you standing
Gracefully,
Behind the curtains,
Pleadingly,
Onto his arms
You tried to clasp
While he stepped back
Out of your grasp.
I blushed, although
You could not see,
The curtains hid
Your view of me,
But when a sob
Escaped your lips,
I felt my heart
Would tear in strips.
You turned, a swan,
Your mask askew,
Your lovely plume
A wintry hue,
And moved as if
To fly away,
But here I grabbed
Your hand.
“Please stay,”
I whispered softly
In your ear,
And though there was
A glint of fear,
You came to me
And wept your pain
Upon my poor,
Weak shoulder frame.
I never thought
I’d ever be
A knight, though
Costumed carefully,
But when I saw
Your glistening grace,
The knight within
Unmasked his face.

Really beautiful and poignant. There’s a great rhythm to it too.

Thank you, Bee. I find your words also to be gentle and flowing.

Cubby, allow me this, that this is a masterpiece. But all of them are, I’d say.

You speak so hyperbolically that, although I won’t say your pants are on fire, I will say you have a high tolerance for burning flesh. πŸ˜‰

Reblogged this on The Arkside of Thought by Sahm King and commented:
An endearing epic, to be sure.

I thought the 2013 copyright would be hard to miss if you read the poem, being right at the end of the poem. I didn’t think republishing my own poem 5 years later would be an issue. I’m sorry if this offended or confused you in some way.

lol no not that at all, sorry I was looking at it from the reader. I just noticed a huge 5 year gap and was like “huh?”
I guess because it was super synchronistic with some of my feelings and stuff. that’s all. sorry.

Ah I see. I was feeling bad about my somewhat short reply, and I was going to apologize about that. I was really sleep-deprived and grouchy when I wrote that, so my apologies if I came across like a prickly pear.

Brava, my dear!!! how beautifully you write and raw and real. How I’ve missed your poetry.
