A Dirge (Villanelle)

My heart keeps drinking shadows of the moon;
I’ve drowned before in darkness when it’s bright;
My eyes keep spinning silence with a spoon

For silent strands to weave a dark cocoon,
Once blinded by the sweetness of the light.
My heart keeps drinking shadows of the moon

While crying tearless tears of a monsoon,
I’m choking on the shapelessness of night.
My eyes keep spinning silence with a spoon,

Your voice no longer readily in tune,
Released from pain its bitter mortal plight;
My heart keeps drinking shadows of the moon.

Sleep welcomes me and asks me not impugn
A destiny I cannot overwrite;
My eyes keep spinning silence with a spoon

Believing it will one day be immune;
Until the light and darkness can unite,
My heart keeps drinking shadows of the moon;
My eyes keep spinning silence with a spoon.

    It’s hard to comment on a poem like this. To say I like it, sounds so trite. You describe grief from a personal level, from a well understood place. Thank you for writing this.

      And thank you for your generous words. Grief will always be personal, but I hope it has not been abstracted beyond recognition.

    I agree with Mary in that “Like” doesn’t cut it. I love the imagery. It all tells a deep and abiding understanding of grief and loss, yet not total loss. There is a note of strength and courage. Thank You.

    You write this form so beautifully, it flows from my lips like butter when I read it aloud! The imagery is so vivid…I can feel it with all my senses and for that, I thank you for writing such a beauty and allowing me to `feel` this moment of grief in company of your words. Bravo, ma chère!
