Mocking Fate

If all we know of love and hate
When deftly whittled to the core
Are ways in which they mock at fate
While knocking down each other’s door,
Then is it such a wonder why
We fight each other every day,
A world that’s full of autocrats
Because they see no other way.

But love is everywhere we look
In flowers bright and grasses green,
Within the prattle of a brook
And sunshine in a dark ravine.
And when the world begins to burn
Forever we will wonder why
As humans we have failed to learn
To love our planet more than “try.”

Yes, we will wonder why, only when it is far, too late. A beautiful, heartfelt piece.

    1. Thank you for your kind words. 🙂

        You are kindly welcome.

    1. More painful than profound, imo. 😢

      1. Unfortunately, I would have to agree with that. But I remain hopeful…

        1. There is always hope as long as there is life.

          1. Indeed, and as they say, “life goes on.”

  3. Wonderful!

  4. Profound! I love so many lines of this poem. The idea of how acrobatic we become to avoid what we don’t want to look at or when we don’t want to act. And, love is everywhere we look, and I think we will wonder why with deep regret. Thank you for this.

    1. And thank you for interpreting my words so profoundly. 🙂

  5. Sometimes we have to look around and find something that refuels our energy for the day. Your post serves up much for me to ponder and think.

    1. If my words can be food for thought, then as long as they do not give you indigestion, I will be happy.

  6. So very true….and, yet, even those of us who HAVE learned find ourselves caught up in the negatives of life.

    1. Very true. But where we have freedom to exercise our choices, it would be a shame not to.

  7. A real wise point to ponder. So well put my friend

  8. Very thoughtful. It’s really sad on our part that we are not realising the graveness of this.

Ow! This one punched me in the gut! 😅

    1. I noticed your other comment so I know you didn’t read mine first, which really amazes me. Talk about being on the same wavelength!

Here’s to being on same wavelength! 🥂😊

  10. This has a beautiful chantlike quality and honesty that is pleasing and enjoyable. Purrfect!!🌸

    1. Aww, thank you so much. You are too kind. 🙂

  11. My dear friend you melodiously imparted one of the world’s greatest sins. We fail to love our planet as much as we sometimes fail to love each other. They may be two animals of the same colour. To quote myself, ” What your head knows your heart doesn’t always remember”, thank you once again for your eloquently reminding us.

    1. That’s an amazing quote. You should be proud of yourself for that one. 🙂

      1. That one came to me years ago, thanks. I wish I could take my own advice lol I repeated it over and over to myself last night! It worked ! I think.

        1. Lol well amazing words to keep in mind 🙂

          1. Yes Mamm!!!!!!! lol 😊

  12. The ending of your poem really is truthfully honest:

“And when the world begins to burn
    Forever we will wonder why
As humans we have failed to learn
To love our planet more than “try.”

You are right and I heard and old saying from someone and here it goes:

“History doesn’t repeat itself, man repeats history.” Quote unknown.

    1. That quote is truth itself. I’m glad you found my words to ring true as well, although not glad that they do.

      1. Told you. When reading your poem it just clicked in my head and got reminded by the quote. Your work is full of heart and truth.

        1. That is rather unfortunate in this case.

            1. Just to be clear, I meant that it is unfortunate that my words ring true as in this case it would be better if they didn’t.

              1. Got it. In writing that happens I think with everyone. It’s happen sometimes in my writing we’re it rings true and I start to realize wow! that’s nuts. I know what you mean.

  13. Your words bring the problem home in a most profound way still we stick our head in the sand in a most dumbfounded way those sands of time counting down the days before have to pay. Good job good poem Cubby I love it

Now let me offer this the last line lost the flow it was smooth until then
    Forever we will wonder why
As humans we have failed to learn
To love our planet more than “try.” (“To love our planet before we die”)
    What are your thoughts?

    1. “Before we die” is definitely stronger and more emphatic. I used the words “more than ‘try'” because they are pointing at the inadequacy of just “trying.” Instead of “trying,” we have to make it happen. That was the message I was trying to get across. “Trying” is not enough. But I love your suggestion, and if it wasn’t for the particular message I was trying to convey, I would lean that way as well. 🙂

  14. I like the pace and rhyming and the images stay in my mind. I especially love the last line very much.

  15. I love this one. There’s beauty in your words. There’s beaty in its flow. There’s beauty in its truth. Environmental stuff always gets me. I saw on The Cosmos that solar power was invented in the 1800s, but it was cheaper to burn coal so it never caught on.

    1. It’s all very depressing, but we can still hope for a miracle.

      1. Those of us care have do everything we can to not make things worse.

  16. Yes….And all we can do is watch things crumble as a certain autocrat removes regulations put in place. 😒😢

    1. It’s amazing how some people refuse to believe in climate change despite the overwhelming evidence that it exists.

  17. Fate dictates*sighs*
but the most we can do is try
