If we could change the world,
Now where would we begin?
Perhaps with hungry mouths,
An easy fight to win;
Perhaps with ghastly wars
That leave the land in pain,
Or doing so much more
To purge the dirty rain.
No matter where we look,
From schools to city slums,
We scratch our heads and sigh,
And faith sometimes succumbs
To truth’s reality,
So hurtful in its shake,
But in these shaken hearts,
Some seeds of change will wake.
The last line has a lot of meaning
Another way of saying that change begins in the hearts of men. 🙂
Unfortunately people don’t change. That’s why we’re in the mess we’re in in the first place. We learn from history that we do not learn from history etc.
People do change, just not always in the direction that we would like them to. Even repeating the same mistakes will reveal changes in our brain chemistry. The difficult part is to translate change on a big enough scale to see its effects.
Sorry, I meant people en masse. (Coffee not kicking in yet this morning.) Individuals can change, but the Mass Unconscious…well, that’s far more difficult to alter for the better.
That, I wholeheartedly agree with.
Just to chip in… I always think that changing others minds/hearts isn’t something we can ever do or should ever do. The only thing we can do is try live our lives in a better way and learn from our mistakes. (hope you don’t mind me butting in)
Don’t mind at all. I think our priority should be changing ourselves, since this is a goal relatively easy to achieve, but I also think it is possible to change other people too, not blatantly over the head with a boulder, but gently like water laps over a rock and smooths its edges. You can change people by supporting them, encouraging them, being there for them, listening to them, being a role model for them…change doesn’t have to be drastic, but even little ripples can move outward and cause bigger ones in their wake.
ah you see I would say to help someone is different.
If you help only with the objective of changing them then i think very often you will not be helping them at all.
Being supportive and encouraging do make very subtle changes but the change should never be the motive just a desire to help and listen should be the motive.
Not sure if this makes sense
It becomes an interesting game of semantics after awhile. When you help someone, are you not helping them because you want to somehow help them change something? Otherwise, what would be the reason for helping anyone if not to try to effect some change?
I guess to me they seem inextricably linked, but I do understand what you mean by “motive” and the sinister undertones that it can have.
I guess to me are you being there ready to help them if they choose to try change or are you pushing pulling.
This poem is magnificent! brilliant and so fricking true! Bravo!
The first 3 words are indeed true; the rest is a good demonstration of your hyperbolic aptitude. 😉
I like this so much…its like you read my mind. I was thinking/praying just this morning that theres so much hurt and ugliness in the world, so many who don’t see or choose not to see the hurtful things they do. Thank you for pointing out that each life hold a promise of change, a possibility worth continuing to hope and pray for. ! May I reblog?
I would be very honored to have my poem reblogged. I am flattered that you think so highly of it. 🙂
