Two Words

From dusk to dawn
I drift the dome,
Across the dark seas
Blubbing foam.
I learn to swim
And fill my lungs
With but two words
In many tongues;
Not baited hunger,
Need or want,
Or siren songs
That baleful haunt,
But beacons of
Respect and peace,
Of warmth and love
Without caprice,
That search for cries
Alone at sea,
The anguished, bitter,
Desperate pleas,
And reach to grasp
A flailing hand
With just two words:
I understand.

Understanding goes a long way in my book!

I feel the same way. It’s sometimes hard to come by though.

Those two words….I’m guessing here, but would they be ‘chartered accountancy’?

    1. Cubby's avatar

A bit off the mark, but I understand how it could be confusing.

You’re right….even beyond love, people crave understanding and the resulting compassion that springs from it. Empathy.

It is remarkable how a little understanding truly can go a long way. Empathy, as you so beautifully state, is the end result.

    Applause… clap, clap, clap.

    1. Cubby's avatar

      Your chickens can clap! 😀

….to chocolate! I take it that’s what you meant. So am I. 😉

I’m just fluffy around the face. The rest is water weight.

    1. Cubby's avatar

Hoot the toot! Sounds like you need to relax in a nice hot bath or have a cold fizzy bubbly, the soda kind. 🙂

What a beautiful poem. I lifted my spirit, thank you 🙂

    1. Cubby's avatar

And you lift my spirit with the kindness of your words. 🙂

Just read this again…it takes so few words to make this planet livable…but I’ve found that the problem is that most people have learned: You Don’t Understand, instead. Loved the poem and the great meaning behind it.

    1. Cubby's avatar

I think most people have a strong desire to be understood by others. In a sense, it is an affirmation of their experiences and, by extrapolation, their very existence. I believe a little compassion and understanding goes a long way. Glad you liked the poem. 🙂

      1. Georgia's avatar

True, you’re 100% right there…you’re a wise Kitty (I hesitate to write Cubby lest that damn “h” pops out by itself…go look at my last poem for an explanation…alas…sigh… lol!)

        1. Cubby's avatar

Well, you’re actually the second person to have done that. As a rhymer, it makes sense to me. I will go check out your poem. 🙂

          1. Georgia's avatar

Well…as I’d written Cubby most of the time, I’ll blame the error or the late hour (my time)…the post is “Silly” Poem Bastet’s Spelling … 😉

Amazing how so few words can say so much…

    1. Cubby's avatar

Yes, it really doesn’t take much to convey compassion for another’s suffering.
