Not Destiny, If

One day the blind will lead the blind
And we will all succumb.
It will not matter what we do,
Our senses will be numb.

We will not bat an eye as earth
Spills blood upon the ground,
Or cry as children fade away
Like ghosts without a sound.

Clear warning signs will not impede,
Trees crashing in despair;
Stumbling, mumbling, in our greed,
Weโ€™ll sit and blankly stare.

Without our sight, we will not see
The havoc we have wrought.
Though itโ€™s begun, not destiny
If vision can be taught.

Some very wise sentiments in this poem Cubby. One hopes it will never be ‘too late.’

I like the clairvoyance in the poem like it’s about to happen and it’s far from now. Great poem, inspiring

Unfortunately not far, but this is how I believe many people feel. Thank you for your lovely thoughts. ๐Ÿ™‚

Children fading away like ghosts–that’s a hard one, truly.

Aye, that is a hard one. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

The blind are already leading the blind

    1. Cubby's avatar

It has begun, but it is not too late.

  10. Georgia's avatar

I like your last hopeful line…yet fear that for the most part, you are not speaking of an obscure future but a too sad present. Grrrreat poem.

    1. Cubby's avatar

Aye, it is not an obscure future, but not too late to change.

      1. Georgia's avatar

True, we just have to stop for a moment in our all consuming consumerism…

Good work Cubby. Keep the passion. The world needs you.

    1. Cubby's avatar

The world needs everyone to open their eyes. Many thanks for your kind words. ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. Ranting Crow's avatar

Lets hope we can open our eyes in time. Thank you for another great poem.

    1. Cubby's avatar

The question is, can vision be taught? For if it can, why do we live in a blind world?

      1. Ranting Crow's avatar

Vision cannot be taught but blindness can. Or being taught to look the other way. Shame huh?

  13. elliebelfiglio's avatar

What a beautiful piece: “One day blind will lead the blind. Our senses will be numb.” A charming concept of the blind and the numb. Well done friend…

    1. Cubby's avatar

Thank you so much for your kind words. ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. soberflight's avatar

Even those who have the vision to see this happening aren’t enough. I already feel that it has begun and builds in speed, relentlessly, and will not be stopped. Many, like you, have cried out the warnings that too few will not heed…they are already blind. Excellent poetry, and I wish I could believe that it’s not our destiny.

    1. Cubby's avatar

Yes, it has begun. We need to educate and teach others globally before we see any real change.

  15. Miranda Stone's avatar

Very powerful poem, Cubby. Hopefully many will heed its message.

This is ominous and powerful, that second stanza heart-breaking

    1. Cubby's avatar

Hopefully not inevitable, although we see it already happening.

There is no fate, but what we make…

    1. Cubby's avatar

What we make ends up being our destiny, a destiny of our making, not one predestined.

        Agreed! ๐Ÿ™‚

We’re close right now, but I like the lining of hope in your last line. Very pertinent. Good job.

    1. Cubby's avatar

Thank you for your thoughts. It is indeed close, but there is still hope. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’d say that day came and went long ago sadly. I try and stay positive but I think there’s maybe 15% of the world actually awake behind the wheel anymore. I applaud you though for speaking your mind, it’s a terrible thing to waste.

    1. Cubby's avatar

Don’t knock the 15%. The world is ruled by less that that in the hands of the powerful. J.K. Rowling has more influence than millions of people.

      1. Poetic's avatar

Oh I’m with you Cubby and I see what’s happening, much more than I’d like at times but my eyes are open. J.K. Rowling would have major influence if she’d actually written any of those books herself but that’s a topic for a different day haha! I hope you’re right though, I hope the 15% can turn the tide and right this ship!

ooh, going dark today!! love this, but I think it won’t be Earth spilling the blood, but stupid humans as usual! it would be amazing if only half the population had vision to see farther than their own nose!!. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Cubby's avatar

Yes, that would be amazing indeed. Maybe we are meant to go the way of the dodo, but I hope not.

    1. Cubby's avatar

Yes, where it is heading, but not inevitably, I hope.
